VW suppliers travel to Germany

Executives from Volkswagen's Chattanooga Operations will head to the home country next week to attend the IZB suppliers fair. They're taking with them a group of state and local officials looking to make connections with manufacturers from around the world.
"More than two years ago we started our project and the key focus from the beginning was to achieve a high US Dollar sourcing share, which we were successful in doing. In the second step, we tried to involve more local business from here in the Chattanooga and Tennessee area and we encouraged worldwide cooperating contractors to involve local business. That was successful with the construction of the factory and we had more than 50% of local companies involved. "In the third step, we are going even further and this will involve making our US and Canadian suppliers more visible to the decision makers that will be attending the IZB in Wolfsburg," Fischer said.
Representatives from the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are sending representatives. SEE ALSO: More renderings released this morning of the sedan that will be made in Chattanooga

Resuscitating America's manufacturing base

Ohio money manager Dock David Treece says the U.S. has a great chance to revive its long-fading factory sector. Overseas wage costs have risen, you've got quality and IP issues to deal with and plenty of companies have received black PR eyes. Treece rightly says workforce training is needed, but there is one big issue he underplays a bit.
For the most part the jobs that left this country were in manufacturing, and not necessarily because they were cheaper abroad. Many Americans simply haven’t wanted to get their hands dirty. Having been convinced that the US is the most educated, developed nation in the world, many feel that a college degree entitles them to a $100,000 per year desk job.

Manufacturing cocktail party chatter

Ever feel like whipping out statistics on the state of the U.S. factory sector? Like how many cell phones are made in here? (Hint, as many as are made in your kitchen.) Here's the place to find them. HT: Chip Hanlon, who rightly points out that a little more perspective would be helpful.
