Airport grants three-year contract

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has approved a three-year contract to allow Nashville-based Service Management Systems to continue providing janitorial services for the Nashville International Airport. The deal will let SMS employ about 90 people and partner with small, minority and woman-owned business Reynolds and Reynolds.

New hangars planned at Tune airport

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority said today that it will build eight new airport hangars at John C. Tune Airport, the reliever airport for Nashville International. The new T-hangars will provide airplane shelter and storage for local aircraft owners.

Local construction company Baron & Dowdle has the contract for the work, which is expected to be complete by October.

Airport runway to reopen

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is set to reopen 8,000-foot-long runway 2C-20C, which has been closed since September for pavement rehabilitation. LoJac Enterprise was awarded the contract for the project, which created 25 jobs. For more on rehab efforts at the airport, see our earlier stories here and here.

Airport Authority's new board members

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has two new members on its 10-member board of commissioners: Saul Solomon, president of Bridgestone Americas U.S. and Canada Commercial Tire Sales division, and Deborah Wright, owner of business services firm Amenacorp Inc. Solomon, who was appointed by Mayor Karl Dean and confirmed by Metro Council in August, will serve as one of the board's industry, commerce and finance representatives. Wright, appointed and confirmed Sept. 7, is one of the board's neighborhood representatives.

Airport authority refunds bonds

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has refunded $86 million in bonds — including $70 million in non-Alternative Minimum Tax bonds and $16 million in Alternative Minimum Tax bonds. The refunding saved the authority a net present value of $8.4 million. "The successful refunding of bonds at this point, during a challenging economic environment, reflects the Nashville Airport Authority's continual commitment to sustainability in all areas, including sound fiscal management," said authority President & CEO Raul Regalado in a statement. The underwriting team on the refunding included Morgan Keegan, JPMorgan, Mesirow Financial and Duncan Williams.

Project runway complete

After a year-long, $28.5 million reconstruction project, the Nashville International Airport will reopen runway 2L-20R the week of Aug. 30. The project generated about 300 jobs, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. The MNAA also provided these fun stats about the materials used in the reconstruction:
  • 89,564 tons of asphalt
  • 66,048 cubic yards of concrete
  • 23,981 tons of stone
  • 87,435 tons of recycled concrete
  • 26,807 tons of recycled asphalt
  • 9.26 miles of cable
  • 2.96 miles of silt fence
