Pali Capital analyst Sheryl Skolnick points out HCA's electronic billboard advertising campaign in several Southern states that posts emergency room wait times. Apparently, the billboards have generated double-digit ER admissions growth — no small matter when the majority of a hospital's admissions stem from the emergency department. TeCoup, a Nashville-based company that sends text-message coupon offers to subscribers, has been bought by a Florida marketing company that sees huge potential in reaching consumers on the go.

A recent survey by the local chapter of the American Marketing Association shows that one in five Middle Tennessee firms will add people in 2010. Respondents also say they're being paid up to 20 percent more than the national average and more than half got bonuses this year. Gulch ad shop Bohan has recruited Dave Smith to be associate creative director and copy chief. Smith was most recently associate creative director of McKee Wallwork Cleveland in Albuquerque and also has taught a portfolio class for the Boston Advertising Club while at Hill Holiday in Boston. Among the clients he's worked with are Toys R Us, CVS, First Tennessee Bank and the U.S. Army.
