And in case the electric car project peters out...

Nissan will next month unveil a small car that can get almost 70 miles per gallon with a traditional internal combustion engine, yet still reach speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.
Its three-cylinder configuration gives many benefits including less weight and further reductions in friction loss, thanks to having fewer moving parts. Further gains are made thanks to the adoption of advanced engine management systems with Start/Stop and energy regeneration.

Ghosn: Electric cars not 'static technology'

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn was at the Paris Auto Show last week selling his company's plans for electric cars. He reiterated the company's stance that it's a pioneer investing for mass production — Nissan is building capacity for 500,000 cars a year — and dismissed potential worries about having to share (voluntarily or not) the technology behind lithium-ion batteries. "I don't think this is a static technology. This is something that is in continuous development," he said. Companies and countries who want the technology "can get this technology and then they're going to have to continue to work on it." That dynamic has the potential to be good long-term news for the auto maker's Smyrna operations, which is one of the sites preparing to crank out the lithium-ion batteries.

Nissan hits Leaf goal three months early

Nissan says it has taken reservations for the first 20,000 Leaf electric cars to be sold in the United States. The company had initially expected to hit that number in December. It will now hold off on new reservations for a while.
Achieving 20,000 reservations marks the successful completion of the first phase of the Nissan LEAF rollout, which began more than five months ago, and no further reservations will be taken until next year. Nissan now is focusing on providing the best level of customer service and premium ownership experience to those who already have enrolled. A subsequent phase of reservations will begin next year, after current reservations and orders have been processed.
