When potentially good statistics go bad

Gotta call foul on this Conference Board survey that purports to highlight how unhappy we are at work now versus 22 years ago. You know, 1987, the fifth of seven straight years of real GDP growth of at least 3 percent. The year the unemployment rate dipped below 6 percent for the first time since 1979. The year the S&P — even after the October crash — would rise 2 percent and be more than 20 percent above its end-of-1985 close. Tell me again why work force sentiment statistics from those days are relevant to today's economy?

And right now, a few of you are channeling your Church Lady: "Well, isn't that special?"

And the lesson is: You don't win by hiding

Pali Research analyst Sheryl Skolnick gives kudos to LifePoint CEO Bill Carpenter, who didn't take his ball and go home after she came out swinging two months ago. Instead, Carpenter made himself and his team available to chat, a strategy that seems to have mollified Skolnick, who'll be in town for a sit-down soon.
