Is Sardar Biglari's appetite for shares of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store waning? (Or is the stock getting expensive after a three-month run of 33 percent?) The San Antonio-based boss of Steak n Shake and activist investor filed papers Friday to show that his Biglarl Holdings added just 4,100 shares to its holdings last Wednesday. The week before, that number was more than 50,000 shares. Biglari now owns a shade under 13.3 percent of Lebanon-based Cracker Barrel.
The Georgia-based investment group that's been steadily buying up shares of nursing home chain Advocat for months, last week waded back into the stock for the first time in more than a month. Covington Health Group on Thursday bought 5,000 shares of Brentwood-based Advocat, lifting its stake in the company to 14.7 percent. Advocat shares (Ticker: AVCA) are flat over the past three months and up slightly from a year ago.
Sardar Biglari's appetite for shares of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store shows no signs of wavering. The Texas-based investor and owner of the Steak n Shake and Western Sizzlin chains on Wednesday bought another 54,515 shares of the local restaurant chain for more than $2.8 million. The purchases lifted his stake in Cracker Barrel (Ticker: CBRL) to 13.3 percent and his 2012 investment in the company to about $40 million.
In September, the fund bought more than 1 million BMTI shares, bringing its stake in the company to 5.3 percent. According to a recent filing with the SEC, that percentage has fallen to 4.
