Pedal power for Midtown

Former professional cyclist Todd Nordmeyer (pictured here) has opened Endeavor Performance, a high-tech training facility, on Hayes Street. The indoor center uses simulation technology to let riders train in groups on their own bikes.
The series' formats are designed to improve athletic performance by varying the training stresses, using wattage, heart rate and cadence to accurately gauge individual effort. Nordmeyer tailors each series to work on specific cycling abilities and skills, and regular performance testing gauges and evaluates improvement.

A dividend rebound play in our backyard

Analyst David Fick at Stifel Nicolaus says that retail real estate investment trusts, having weathered the worst of the financial storm, now have the ability to boost their cash payouts big time. Chattanooga's CBL & Associates, which runs four malls in the Nashville area, could triple its dividend this year, he says.
I don't think that's really recognized in the market. The last two years were characterized by what we call "the wall of shame." We sold the market the idea that REIT dividends were safe and stable in the long term, and it turned out that when stressed, that really that was not true.

Hickory Hollow owner slashes its value by 88%

In reporting its fourth-quarter results, CBL & Associates — which owns the CoolSprings Galleria, RiverGate Mall and Hickory Hollow Mall — says the last of those three will generate a lot less cash going forward, which requires an adjustment of its book value. The 1.1 million-square-foot center's new "appropriate" value for Chattanooga-based CBL: $12.6 million, down from more than $107 million. The small piece of good news:
Currently Hickory Hollow Mall generates insufficient NOI to cover debt service on its $33.4 million recourse loan. CBL plans to continue to service the loan, which is self-liquidating, over the remaining eight year term.
