Bridgestone donates $1M to Ebola response efforts

The Bridgestone Group has announced it will donate $1 million to Ebola response efforts in West Africa.

Bridgestone Americas will donate $500,000 to Samaritan's Purse, and Bridgestone Corp. in Tokyo will donate $500,000 to UNICEF. Firestone Liberia, a subsidiary of Bridgestone, has been directly affected by the outbreak, according to a release. Since the outbreak hit Liberia, a number of Firestone employees and those in their communities have contracted the virus. Additionally, the Firestone Medical Center located on the company's rubber farm has been treating Ebola patients.

"Our Firestone Liberia teammates and community have selflessly met the demands of this deadly outbreak and we support them and the great work Samaritan's Purse and UNICEF are doing in the region to help protect the citizens of Liberia and West Africa," said Gary Garfield, Bridgestone Americas CEO and president.

Local hospital operator HCA Holdings also donated $1 million last week.

Report: Bridgestone looking for HQ options

Getahn Ward at The Tennessean reports that Bridgestone Americas officials have been scouting the region for sites that could house up to 400,000 square feet of office space for a new headquarters. The tire maker has reportedly looked at the former Nashville Convention Center at Fifth Avenue and Broadway as well as the SoBro spot where Tony Giarratana wants to build Sheet Music and a site in Brentwood.

Bridgestone's 1,000-person HQ has long been on Marriott Drive near Nashville International Airport. The company has a lease there until 2017.
