Hot days, more shopping

U.S. retail sales climbed higher in June than analysts expected, particularly for department stores. Maybe the heat wave had something to do with it?
Warmer weather and the end of school helped push more shoppers into stores in June, according to Betty Chen, an analyst at Wedbush Securities in San Francisco. Retailers typically discount merchandise in June to clear inventory and make room for fall merchandise. Those clearance sales also helped drive sales in the month, said Howard Tubin, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets in New York.
“Customers will not likely begin shopping in earnest for new fall fashions until August and September,” Tubin said in a research note. “We don’t have high hopes for business in July but would expect a pickup thereafter.”
Nordstrom's sales were up 14.1 percent in the month, above analysts' 9.1 percent growth expectations. J.C. Penny Co.'s sales were up 4.5 percent, compared to a 3.7 percent expectation, and Macy's sales rose 6.5 percent.

More proof the tech sector's looking better

Brentwood-based software development firm Sy.Med Development Inc. said the first quarter of 2010 was its best since Q3 2007. Sy.Med, which develops credentialing software for health care providers, recorded net income about 21 percent higher and revenue about 4 percent higher than the same quarter last year. Looks like more proof that Nashville's technology sector is bouncing back.
