A peek at Brookdale's Q4 numbers

In anticipation of some upcoming industry and investor conferences, Brookdale Senior Living today provided a preview of its fourth quarter occupancy and same-store information.
Bill Sheriff, Brookdale's CEO, said, "We continue to see solid, positive trends in the fundamentals of our business. We produced the fifth consecutive quarter of occupancy increases in a market that still has its demand challenges."
Occupancy at the Nashville company's some 560 senior living communities increased 10 basis points to 87.5 percent from the third quarter and 90 basis points from the fourth quarter of 2009. The company's preliminary same-store data shows revenue climbing nearly 4 percent, compared to expense growth of 1.8 percent and facility operating income improvement of 8 percent compared to the year-ago quarter. Brookdale (Ticker: BKD) will report final Q4 and year-end numbers later this month.

Health Care Council names board

The Nashville Health Care Council today announced its 2010-'11 board of directors. New to the board are Meharry Medical College President and CEO Wayne Riley, Brookdale Senior Living CEO Bill Sheriff, Cressey & Co. partner Sen. Bill Frist and Sarah Cannon Research Institute CEO Dee Anna Smith. Re-elected to three-year terms are HCA Chairman & CEO Richard Bracken, Cumberland Pharmaceuticals CEO A.J. Kazimi, Passport Health Communications Chairman Jim Lackey, and Vanguard Health Systems Vice Chairman Keith Pitts. Eight members were elected to one-year terms. Those incldue George Bishop of Waller Lansden, Patrick Blake of McKesson, Stuart Campbell of Stites & Harbison, M. Robert DiGia of UBS Investment Bank, Ric Pennisi of Marsh, Andrew Quirk of Skanska USA, Tom Walker of Deloitte & Touche, Tom Wylly of Brentwood Capital Advisors and Melissa Waddey of LifePoint Hospitals. Psychiatric Solutions CEO Joey Jacobs will continue in his second year as chairman and Healthways CEO Ben Leedle remains vice-chair.
