Smith Seckman adds to Chicago office

Engineering and design firm Smith Seckman Reid has hired Marcos Benitez as a SSRCx field agent in its Chicago office. Benitez has more than 10 years of experience in electrical engineering and comes to Smith Seckman's SSRCx commissioning subsidiary after working as a project engineer on health care, higher education and commercial projects. He earned his electrical engineering degree from Northern Illinois University.

Smith Seckman unit wins nuclear research site contract

SSRCx, the commissioning arm of Smith Seckman Reid, has begun working with the National Nuclear Security Administration on a 1.5 million-square-foot research and manufacturing campus in Kansas City. SSRCx will oversee the LEED facilitation, energy modeling and commissioning services that are expected to help cut the facility’s energy use by more than half — that's $374,000 a day — versus its current home, which was built in 1949. Construction is scheduled to run through 2013.

With the development community increasingly buying into the environmental and business benefits of sustainable development, the next challenge is to get that message to other community leaders. Jacob Halcomb, a senior project manager at SSRCx Sustainable Solutions Group, is doing his part. Halcomb is the liaison between the advocacy and outreach committee of the United Nations Environment Programme, which is working to spread the word of a global sustainability metric developed by its Sustainable Buildings & Climate Initiative. “SBCI identified the need for a common language and definition for sustainable buildings,” he said. “Now, the committee is working to educate and raise awareness among global leaders about the important role of sustainable buildings in addressing climate change.” Check out more on the UNEP's SBCI program here.
