Last week, right after Michigan-based insurer Jackson National Life Insurance Co. revealed plans to set up a regional headquarters that will bring some 400 jobs to Cool Springs, its second-in-command plunked down $4 million on a 68-acre equestrian spread near Leiper's Fork.Mike Wells, vice chairman and chief operating officer of Jackson National, announced the insurer's expansion last Tuesday in a local press conference and then closed the next day on the property, located at 3395 Bailey Road. Seller F. David Bender had put the four-bedroom home and lands on the market in October 2008 at $4.9 million. Amenities of the gated estate include a riding ring, stables and two stocked ponds, with over a mile of paved roads connecting them. Wells has previously been based in Jackson National's Santa Monica, Calif. office. Susan M. James and Mary Catherine McAnulty, agents with Viva Properties LLC, represented the seller. No information is available on the buyer's agent, if there was one. Update: According to Susan James, Darla Duncan of Redd Realty in Franklin represented buyer Mike Wells.

Two years into this little exercise in gawking at the rich and famous, we feel able to draw one conclusion from the monthly fluctuations this column has observed: They tell us a little, but not much, about the local economy and housing market. "Headline Homes" prices, like the stock market, bottomed out in late winter or early spring 2009 and have posted a general upward trend since then — punctuated by hiccups. January was, if nothing else, a hiccup.

December was a record-setting month for Middle Tennessee high-end residential real estate. At the top our latest list of big sales is a high-profile country cowboy who appears to have dropped more than $9 million for a Williamson estate. Also in the mix: A relocated social media entrepreneur, a Bass Berry partner and a book wholesaler.
