Ranking banking's most valuable brands

Birmingham financial services consulting firm Bancography has updated its Brand Value Index for 2011 and says Wells Fargo is the country's strongest bank brand for the first time since 2008. Other large lenders active in Middle Tennessee also scored well: U.S. Bank, Fifth Third, BB&T and Bank of America all are in the top 10. But this region's large homegrown players don't figure on the list: "[T]he South and Mid-Atlantic regions are only minimally represented in the top 10 lists, indicating the troubled economy continues to affect brand strength. Institutions in those regions have suffered significant financial losses and greatly diminished balance growth rates."

BB&T still a buyer

Kelly King, CEO of regional banking power BB&T, says he's on the prowl for acquisitions, particularly in Texas and the Midwest. Tennessee, where BB&T is much stronger in the East than the Middle or West, isn't specifically mentioned, but "high-growth markets" are on the list.
