Belmont breaks ground on $32M law building [1]
Belmont University today broke ground on the 71,000-square-foot facility that will house its new College of Law — Middle Tennessee’s first law school in nearly a century.
The $32 million project, located at the corner of Acklen and 15th Avenues, will contain more than a dozen classrooms, a trial courtroom, appellate courtroom, two-story law library and more than 20 faculty offices.
Slated to open in 2012, the Randall and Sadie Baskin Center is being supported by a $7 million leadership grant from Randall Baskin, owner of Randall Baskin Co., founder of Continental Life Insurance Co. and a 19-year Belmont board member.
“I’ve been part of the Belmont family for a long time, watching this university grow and change at an exponential rate,” said Baskin, who also endows a scholarship fund at Belmont that has supported more than 100 students since 1983. “Sadie and I take great joy in supporting those efforts. We believe this law school can provide many dedicated students a chance not only to build better lives for themselves, but also impact their community for years to come.”
The Baskin Center is being designed and built by Nashville companies Earl Swensson Associates and R.C. Mathews, who will seek to achieve silver LEED certification for the project.
The law school will begin classes in the fall of 2011 and eventually enroll 360 students. It's Belmont's seventh college and fourth doctoral program.
