Watkins trustee named commissioner of school [1]
Gov. Phil Bredesen has named Susan Basham commissioner of Watkins College of Art, Design and Film.
Basham's appointment marks the first time in Watkins' history that a graduate of the school – she received her interior design degree in 1985 – has become one of its three active commissioners. Watkins is held in trust by the state of Tennessee in keeping with the will of its founder, Samuel Watkins.
Basham, who was on the school's board of trust the past 11 years, joins Brownlee Currey Jr. and Walter Knestrick as commissioners. She replaces former faculty member Cecy Reed, who died in January after almost 12 years as commissioner.
Basham received her undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia. Currently a partner in antique market Belle Meade Shoppes, her career has included stints at Castner Knott, Wayne Bonner and Associates, Bonner-Avant Interiors.
Samuel Stumpf, chair of Watkins' board, said Basham “is the ideal person to become our newest commissioner. We are delighted and very fortunate that she has been appointed to this position which is so important to the future of the College.”
