The Schermerhorn Symphony may soon have to answer for its staircase.

Sybil McLain, marketing director at Street Dixon Rick Architecture, has sued the Nashville Symphony Association for $250,000 after she fell the length of its marble staircase following a recent CABLE Luncheon.

McLain, who long was the spokeswoman for BellSouth/AT&T and before that worked at SunTrust Bank, had just left the meeting held by the local networking organization for women on April 11 when her left foot slid out from under her, sending her to bottom of the stairs.

She landed on the right side of her body, and her chin struck the steps. She was in pain and suffered several cuts to her face and knees. She attended physical therapy for a rotator cuff injury and had to undergo surgery to repair that issue.

The complaint – which is available here – alleges the Symphony was negligent in the maintenance of its staircase. McLain said the symphony told her three other people have fallen down the stairs, but according to the lawsuit, the symphony took no extra measures to prevent falls.

The stairs are not carpeted and do not have edges or rubber strips affixed to them to reduce the chance someone will take a tumble, according to the complaint, making them "dangerous to walk on."

Todd Sandahl, who is representing McLain, did not return multiple calls for comment, and Alan Valentine, the Symphony's CEO, could not be reached Friday afternoon.
