Haslam names 23 Nashville-area residents to state boards

Governor appoints 3 new members to Board of Ed, finds spot for former lawmaker

Of the nearly 120 people Gov. Bill Haslam named to various state agencies and commissions this week, nearly two dozen of them hail from in or around Nashville.

The governor’s office announced his picks for 52 boards and commissions ranging from well-known panels like the State Board of Education and the Commission on Children and Youth to lesser known groups like the Great War Commission and the Private Investigation and Polygraph Commission.

Counted among the Nashville-area appointees is Wendy Tucker, a former advisor to Mayor Karl Dean and past attorney in the Davidson County Public Defender’s Office. Haslam named her and two other new members of the state Board of Education. The others include Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Regulatory Affiars at Methodist Healthcare Cato Johnson of Memphis, and Lillian Hartgrove of Cookeville who serves as workforce development and education vice president for the Cookeville-Putnam County Chamber of Commerce and the Highlands Economic Partnership.

Haslam also reappointed Nashville's Rob Mortensen to the Commission on Children and Youth. Mortensen's recent political history includes running an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination to the area's District 20 Senate seat in 2012, losing to Steve Dickerson who later won in the general election.

Also among Haslam’s 118 picks for state boards is state Rep. Barrett Rich, a Somerville Republican who is stepping down from his House seat this year. Haslam appointed him to the Board of Parole.
