Verizon announces another Middle Tennessee hiring surge

Mobile provider will add 300 in Franklin and Murfreesboro

Verizon Wireless will add 300 jobs in Middle Tennessee, the wireless communication services provider announced Thursday.

New York-based Verizon will hire for positions at its call centers and at various retail outlets throughout the Midstate. This is the second hiring surge for Verizon in Middle Tennessee in recent years. In 2011, the company added 300 to its Franklin call center.

"Verizon currently employs over 2,600 people in Tennessee, and we’re experiencing dramatic growth that allows us to further invest in Tennessee jobs," said Jerry Fountain, region president for the company. "Our focus is always on building career paths for our employees; there’s tremendous potential for growth in the wireless industry."

In a sign that the local labor market really is getting tight — the Nashville MSA's unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in May, down from 6.6 percent a year earlier — Verizon is being extremely aggressive in this latest hiring push, offering $1,000 signing bonuses to new employees in addition to "competitive salaries and benefits."
