Healthways in JV with Texas docs

Companies to market administration, coaching, data services to other organizations

Wellness services provider Healthways is teaming up with a large physician group in North Texas to launch a company that will market population health management services to other groups.

The joint venture between Genesis Physicians Group and Franklin-based Healthways is called GenHealth and will pair the management expertise of Genesis with the coaching, coordination and analytics offerings of Healthways. An accountable care organization affiliated with Genesis has signed on to use the population health management tools.

“Innovative healthcare providers such as GPG are assuming more financial and quality outcomes risk for their patient populations,” said Healthways President and CEO Ben Leedle. “We firmly believe that by directly supporting the patient-physician relationship with well-being improvement solutions, we will create faster, more sustained engagement in order to proactively reduce the causes and effects of disease and achieve significantly greater impacts on medical savings, productivity and performance.”

Based in Dallas, Genesis supports about 1,400 physician members in 70 medical specialties. About a third of its doctors are primary care physicians.

“This joint venture is a market-shifting opportunity to unlock the unique knowledge and expertise of physicians and empower them to help transform healthcare to a more economically sustainable model,” said James Walton, president and CEO of Genesis Physicians Group and GenHealth. “We needed a partner with the critical assets, expertise and experience in delivering proven value. Further, we wanted that partner to show the necessary flexibility to help us build a comprehensive population management solution that would work in concert with our existing market offerings.”

Shares of Healthways (Ticker: HWAY) fell slightly in Tuesday trading to $16.32. They have risen about 6 percent year to date.
