Franklin-based coloring book publisher bought by competitor

Dalmatian now under private equity umbrella

Franklin-based coloring book publisher Dalmatian has been bought by an Ohio company.

Dalmatian Press produces and sells consumable early childhood development, coloring and activity products. Its acquisition by Ashland, Ohio-based Bendon Inc. creates one of the largest producers of children's educational coloring and activity products in the country.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bendon is, in turn, owned by New York's Wicks Group of Companies, a private-equity firm investing in educational and media companies. Daniel Black, managing partner at Wicks, said the acquisition doubles the size of Bendon and represents a confidence in Dalmatian's success.

"There are no job relocations contemplated as a result of the acquisition at this time. We believe the people at Dalmatian are critical to the combined company's ongoing success. We expect to maintain a strong presence in Nashville," he said.
