Angelo Formosa Foods, a fruit and vegetable wholesaler that's been operating from North Nashville for nearly a century, has sold.
Choice Food Group — also of Nashville — confirmed today its purchase of the Germantown-based institution. Choice is chaired by noted local entrepreneur Mike Shmerling, who also runs several businesses under the XMi brand. The company also has over the years acquired Vietti Foods, Amerian Seafood Co. and Hobson Food Service.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Formosa Foods will continue operations out of its facility on Monroe Street. The company runs a fleet of 25 refrigerated trucks.
Angelo Formosa Sr. immigrated from Italy to Nashville in 1916, starting his fruit company with bananas and nuts sold out of a cart. His grandson, Angelo III, still runs the business today.
