British artist sues Kirkland's, claims copyright infringement

Lawsuit involves animal images

British artist Kate Mawdsley has filed a lawsuit against Nashville-based home d├ęcor company Kirkland's, claiming copyright infringement.

In the lawsuit, Mawdsley claims that her drawings of animals like Jerry Giraffe and Leo Lion appear on several forms of wall art for sale at Kirkland's.

The wall art representations of the animals are “substantially similar or identical” to Mawdsley's work, the lawsuit claims. Her artwork is available for public view on via her website and at trade shows.

The lawsuit, filed earlier this week in the U.S. District Court of Middle Tennessee, also asks for a permanent injunction to halt the sale of the products and for all profits from previous sales.
