Snedeker seemingly buys from Herbstreit, ex-Hornets owner sells, McNair widow makes moves, and more...

This month’s Headline Homes has a sporting flavor.

Topping our list is Nashville’s favorite PGA player buying from a relocated Buckeye-slash-ESPN-talking-head.

The McNair family appears twice — once in conjunction with a former NBA owner.

Outside of the sports stargazing, it’s a fairly normal list this month. Joining the athletes and former NBA owner are the usual collection of doctors, bankers and tax evaders who claim citizenship in fake countries.

You know. Nothing out of the ordinary.

As always, what follows is our list of the Top 10 February home sales for Nashville and surrounding counties, ranked by price:

1. 2509 Iron Gate Court, Franklin 37069
Buyer: Brandt Snedeker
Sell price: $3.3 million
Seller: Irongate Trust
Seller’s agent: Laura Baugh, Worth Properties
Buyer’s agent: Steve G. Fridrich, Fridrich & Clark

Irongate Trust bought this house in June 2011 for $3.23 million, so a smallish profit results for its beneficiary. Back when this home changed hands nearly two years ago, based on the name of the trustee, a Columbus, Ohio-based attorney named Brian Chorpenning, we sussed that the actual buyer was ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit — mentioned in numerous news stories as Chorpenning’s client and “close friend.”

It’s unclear if Herbstreit is abandoning Nashville altogether or just moving across town. The buyer is, of course, PGA professional Brandt Snedeker, whose recent run of success likely allowed him to afford the home.

 
2. 4404 Honeywood Drive, Belle Meade 37205

Built in 1930, this Belle Meade classic was renovated in 1976, 1986 and, most recently, in 2009. It includes a “designated historic walled garden by [the] Smithsonian Institute,” which sounds interesting. Ben Page & Associates did the landscape design and Henry Hibbs designed the home.

Cheek is a Bass, Berry & Sims attorney and scion of the Cheek family of Maxwell House Coffee fame. Mr. Helman is the founder and president of Continuous Health, an Atlanta-based health care tech firm.

Jonula McNair is the widow of murdered Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair. The McNairs paid $1.6 million for this home in 2004.

The 26-room Green Hills mansion was on the market when McNair was slain by his mistress on July 4, 2009.

This Mediterranean manse has five bedrooms and five full baths within its 7,000-plus square feet. The gourmet kitchen opens to the den and the outside is real stucco, not that fake stuff that’s going around.

Matthew Willis is an orthopedic surgeon. Bruno Comoglio is the principal at Aerowing, a company that provides ground support for military and commercial aircraft.

T And T Trust is associated with the heirs to the Steve McNair estate, who needed a new place to live, one supposes, after selling up at No. 2.

Emporia LLC shares a Maryland Farms address with the Trulight Foundation, “a mission of service to the Lord Jesus Christ and to the people of the world and to promote a healthy and cancer-free lifestyle through nurturing the body, mind and spirit.” The foundation is the project of George Shinn, former owner of the NBA’s New Orleans (née Charlotte) Hornets.

Emporia bought a 9,500-square-footer in Franklin last July. This Oak Hill home (pictured) is 500 square feet smaller, but sits on a park-like lot and is within walking distance to Radnor Lake, where parking is often a bear.

Built in 1925, this Tudor sits on a 3.76- acre lot, which includes a small stone guest house.

The home had been in the Bell family since 1975, when Dr. Robert Bell moved with his wife, Margery, to Nashville to work as a pathologist and director of nuclear medicine at what was then Parkview and West Side hospitals. Dr. Bell died in late 2007.

This 1940 Tudor — big month for those — fetched $5,000 more than its original asking price and was on the market for a mere 26 days. It sits on nearly two acres and has hardwood floors and high ceilings throughout.

Mr. Bowen is the COO of Franklin American Mortgage Co.

The listing says homes rarely become available on Old Club Court in The Fairways development off Woodlawn — and the listing doesn’t lie. This was the first sale on the cul-de-sac in six years. The 5,186-square-footer features a gourmet kitchen, an elevator, a screened porch and a view of the lake.

Bob Oglesby is Tennessee’s state architect.

Custom built in 2008, this 7,300-square-foot home has six bedrooms and four bathrooms — and 21 rooms all told.

It is “unlike all the other homes,” according to the listing, though it doesn’t say which other homes it is unlike specifically.

Buyer Dixit is a pediatric neurosurgeon.

This home has a complicated history.

The seller of record is Pinnacle Bank, and it is, technically, a foreclosure. However, before that, it was owned by a legion of people, all associated vaguely with something called the Shaykamaxum Republic, the Shield of Faith Embassy Trust and dozens of people with biblical names jammed up against mangled Hebrew.

It appears to be a very complicated, esoteric, arcane way of evading taxes and mortgage payments. It didn’t work (it never does). The Ryckmans don’t claim citizenship in nonexistent countries, but they did show up in Headline Homes in April 2011 with a purchase in Old Hickory.
