The U.S. arm of a global cosmetics manufacturer will invest $38 million to build a plant in Murfreesboro that will in five years be home to 450 workers.
Schwan Cosmetics USA is consolidating its operations in Lewisburg — from where more than 200 jobs will relocate — and Piscataway, N.J., and will locate its U.S. headquarters in Rutherford County when the 173,000-square-foot plant off Interstate 24 at Joe B. Jackson Parkway opens in the first half of 2015.
Germany-headquartered Schwan runs a dozen cosmetics factories around the world (along with writing instruments and outdoor product businesses) that crank out everything from eyeliner and lipstick to powder and mascara for other cosmetic brands. Parent company Schwan-Stabilo Group was founded in 1855 and is a family-owned company that now employs more than 4,400 people.
“Schwan Cosmetics, the leading private label manufacturer of cosmetic pencils and products worldwide, is very pleased to announce our investment in a state-of-the-art facility in Murfreesboro,” said Barbara Bauer-Kropf, executive vice president of sales for Schwan Cosmetics. “The new Schwan Cosmetics USA will be a full-service private label supplier continuing to build on Schwan Cosmetics’ heritage of developing and introducing innovative, market-driven color cosmetics.”
The announcement by Schwan caps off a nice second half of 2013 for Rutherford County's ECD team. Since June 30, food company Taylor Farms, auto giant Nissan and online retailer Amazon said they planned to add a combined 450 jobs in Rutherford in the coming years.
