Saint Thomas names executive director for physician recruitment, development

Former Heritage Medical Associates CEO will oversee staff for five hospitals

Saint Thomas Health announced today it has named veteran physician practice executive manager Mark Grasela as executive director for physician recruitment and development for the hospital system.

Grasela (pictured) will oversee medical staff development and recruitment efforts for each of Saint Thomas Health’s five hospitals and various development initiatives.

Previously, Grasela served as president and chief executive officer of Heritage Medical Associates, a multi-specialty medical practice with multiple locations in the Nashville area.  During his 13-year tenure with Heritage, Grasela grew the practice from 25 to more than 100 physicians and added multiple new specialties and office locations. He also had a lead role in the merger of two independent practice associations and the development of an accountable care organization.

“We are fortunate to have someone of Mark’s skill and experiences join our team,” Wes Littrell, Saint Thomas Health chief strategy officer and CEO of Saint Thomas Affiliates, said in a release. “Our ministry values physician alignment and has built a strong reputation on collaborating with and supporting physicians.  Mark’s knowledge of this market and the unique aspects of the physician experience will serve us well in physician manpower planning and recruitment.”

Grasela was with the previous Saint Thomas Health/Hospital system from 1995 until 1999, first as executive director of physician integration services and, later, as executive vice president of physician services.

Grasela received his Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Siena College.
