Wiseman Ashworth Law adds veteran attorney as of counsel

Former Vanderbilt official will focus on medical malpractice work

John C. McCauley has joined Wiseman Ashworth Law Group, PLC, as of counsel, the firm announced Monday.

McCauley, a former Vanderbilt University assistant vice chancellor of risk and insurance management and associate general counsel, will work with the Wiseman Ashworth attorneys on medical malpractice cases and advise the firm’s clients on risk management issues.

“John brings extensive experience in health care risk management and insurance to our firm,” Gail Vaughn Ashworth, a founding member of the firm, said in a release. “He has managed complex catastrophic litigation involving medical, hospital, physician, home health and nursing home claims. His knowledge, accomplishments and legal experience are a perfect fit with our firm’s areas of practice.”

McCauley was associated with Vanderbilt from 1996 to 2011. During that time, he created, developed and implemented risk management programs for the medical center and university operations, including a level one trauma center, a 1,000-physician faculty, nursing home affiliations, home health services, a regional children’s hospital and psychiatric and rehabilitation hospitals.
In addition, McCauley’s experience also includes a nine-year association with Macon, Ga.-based Charter Medical Corp., at which he was senior executive director of risk management and claims counsel. Prior to that, he worked for Norton Healthcare Inc. and Humana Inc., both located in Louisville.

McCauley is a J.D. graduate of Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. He holds a B.A. in mathematics from Mount Saint Mary’s University.
