Major mixed-use development planned for 21st Avenue

Vanderbilt-area project to sit on site where 21st, Broadway, Division converge

One of the more prime spots near Vanderbilt University is slated for a major mixed-use project that is expected to include a 19-story hotel.

Indianapolis-based developer Buckingham Cos. plans to reinvent 1.75 acres fronting the east side of 21st Avenue along which sits the former building home to Mario’s (lost to a fire) and buildings accommodating Ken’s Sushi, Benchmark and Wendy’s. The site is prime in that it addresses 21st, Broadway and Division Street.

Buckingham, which is working with the LaGasse family (which has long owned the properties), will need a height variance. The plan calls for a 19-story hotel, retail, residential and structured parking. The developers will go before the Metro Planning Commission in early November.

A quick scan of the Buckingham website reveals the company has done nothing on the scale — in terms of height and mass — of its proposed Nashville development. The project most similar is Cityway in downtown Indianapolis.
