Couple sentenced for embezzlement, identity theft

Old Hickory duo funded three-year spending spree with wheelchair manufacturer's credit card

An Old Hickory couple has been sentenced to four years in prison for embezzling more than $1 million and assuming the identity of a former co-worker of the wife.

Johnny Haney, 43, and Jennifer Haney, (also known as Jennifer Stopper), 40, were sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger. After serving their sentences, the Haneys will be on supervised release for three years and have to repay more than $1.3 million to Permobil, a Lebanon maker of electric wheelchairs where Jennifer Haney worked in accounts payable.

Jennifer Haney gained control of a Permobil corporate credit card in mid-2004 after a colleague left the company. She turned it over to her husband, who in the next three and a half years used it to rack up charges of more than $300,000 at Nashville Sporting and Academy Sports – allowing them, in Trauger 's words, to act as "high rollers in this culture of youth sports" – as well as another $160,000 at various restaurants.
