Interim boss for Civic Design Center

Former Belle Meade vice mayor has run construction consulting firm since 2006

Julia Fry Landstreet has been named interim executive director of the Nashville Civic Design Center.

Landstreet, who takes over from Susannah Shumate, will oversee the administrative and development functions for the organization and work with Design Director Gary Gaston on its two monthly programs, CityThink and the Urban Design Forum. Shumate recently took the development director job at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry.

Landstreet has since 2006 run a construction consulting business that specializes in “green” applications. Before that, she was commissioner and vice mayor of the city of Belle Meade, where she led the work to rebuild city hall and spearheaded efforts for new zoning codes.

“Julia has a real enthusiasm and understanding of the profound impact the NCDC mission has on the greater good of the city,” said Mercedes Jones, NCDC board chair. “This coupled with a knowledge of the challenges of the built environment in an urban setting and extensive organizational skills and experience with nonprofits make her a great addition.”

The timeframe to name a permanent executive director has yet to be determined.

Landstreet earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College in New York and attended Franklin College in Switzerland.
