Healthcare Management Systems’ parent company today announced the acquisition of Texas-based emergency department information systems company Medhost.

HealthTech Holdings Inc.'s deal for Medhost helps round out the slate of health care IT products HMS already provides for hospitals and physician offices and propels the holding company's revenues above $100 million for 2010.

HealthTech, formerly HMS Acquisition Corp., also owns HMS spinoff Sentry Healthcare Services.

HMS CEO Tom Stephenson told NashvillePost.com that the company had been looking for a way to fill the emergency department product gap in its suite of offerings, and Medhost, with its established customer base of about 170 clients, was the most viable option.

"Along with the acquisition of the ambulatory product we did late last year, around September, this gives us a pretty complete clinical product suite," he said.

Medhost will continue to provide specialized emergency department IT systems for its larger community and tertiary hospital customer base, but it will also create a product specifically designed for HMS's community hospital market that can be integrated to the HMS enterprise-wide product.

HMS currently provides its clinical and financial health care IT products to more than 650 hospitals nationwide. It acquired the ambulatory EMR product for physician offices to complement its hospital systems and help doctors capture government reimbursements for electronic health record systems.

Moving forward, Stephenson said there are no acquisitions "on the immediate horizon," but that the company is continually looking at acquisition and development opportunities to meet industry trends.
