Two retailers laying off about 140

Sellers of suits and books trim Davidson and Rutherford staffs

Two retailers have told the state they are shutting down operations here and cutting 139 positions in the coming weeks.

Borders Group Inc. last week began shedding 96 jobs from its 564,000-square-foot distribution center in La Vergne, which will close two days before Christmas. The layoffs come seven months after a previous cutback in March eliminated about 120 jobs.

Men’s Warehouse Inc. has told state officials it will lay off 43 people next Friday as it prepares to close its store in The Mall at Green Hills. That location is the $2 billion chain’s only outlet in Tennessee.
