Tennessean to shed more employees

Newspaper responds to rumors by confirming that 35 will lose jobs this month

Nashville's daily newspaper is preparing to lay off staffers once more, following dramatic job cuts in December.

Bob Faricy, vice president of market development for The Tennessean, has confirmed to NashvillePost.com that staffers were told in a meeting today to expect 35 layoffs in the near future and that 25 currently open positions would go unfilled.

"The announcement was a clarification of a national story that came out," Faricy said, referring to several reports yesterday that Gannett Co., parent of the paper, will lay off at least 1,000 workers in coming days.

"There's been no specific action taken," Faricy added. "That is most likely going to happen by July 9th." He could not comment on how many of the cuts would come from newsroom positions and how many from elsewhere.

Late last year, The Tennessean cut 92 jobs, laying off 25 newsroom employees and opting not to fill four editorial staff vacancies. In March, it announced further cost-cutting steps, including mandatory furloughs for all staff members.

Gannett has suffered in the recession, as nearly all media enterprises have. But a recent analysis of its debt obligations by TheDeal.com suggests the company is in even more dire trouble than some of its peers. The article states that "Gannett as we know it will be lucky to last through June 2011."
