Gordon challenger confused about the office he seeks

Sixth District Congressional candidate's Web site reprints text word for word from obscure presidential candidate -- Updated with response from Evans

UPDATE 3:26 p.m.: Evans responds via e-mail: "The content to which you refer was inadvertently included in the web site, and should not have been included in the launch version of the site. It was a model we had used in our draft. We have made the appropriate adjustment and removed the content from the site.

We appreciated your eagle eye on these matters, and would also appreciate it if you applied the same eagle eye to Bart Gordon's travel habits -- particularly his recent taxpayer funded trip to Europe."

As originally reported:

Representative Bart Gordon earned himself a challenger this week, but looking at the candidate's Web site, there seems to be some confusion as to which office he thinks Bart Gordon holds.

Dave Evans, the Bedford County Republican Party Chairman, announced his intention to run as Republican against Gordon on March 3. But a perusal of the his site reveals several sections of text that indicates he is running for President.

That text, it turns out, is identical to that which appears on an obscure presidential candidate's Web site out of Ohio by the name of Jerry Curry. Both sites include a list of 11 issues with text establishing the candidate's views on those topics. The sections on both sites are the exact reproductions, word for word

In fact, at three different points where Evans describes his stance on the issues, the text refers to what Evans would do “as President."

Gordon's campaign, in a press release, says the following about the striking similarities: "In the haste of plagiarizing Curry's content, Evans forgot to make simple changes to reflect that he was running for Congress and not “President.” It seems that Dave Evans is so devoid of integrity and knowledge about the issues facing our country that he has to rely on stealing the positions of former candidates.

Character does matter – if a person chooses to plagiarize someone else’s work and call it their own, that says something."

Attempts to contact Evans by e-mail or telephone were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
