Dean appoints hotel/motel tax committee
Mayor Karl Dean announced the appointment of a six-person committee to oversee the administration of the fund created by the additional hotel/motel tax passed by Metro Council in September.
The additional 50-cent room tax, which was opposed by the city’s smaller hotel owners, will go to marketing events like the Music City Bowl. It will also be used to lure new events, like the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final Four, to Nashville.
Mike Kelly, owner of Jimmy Kelly’s restaurant, will serve as the chair of the committee. Also serving will be former chairwoman of the Travel Industry Association for America Sandra Fulton, Gaylord Entertainment CEO Colin Reed, Tennessee Hotel and Lodging Association CEO Walt Baker, Fifth Third Bank Vice President Kevin Lavender and First Tennessee Banking Group President Mike Edwards.
The first committee meeting is scheduled for Nov. 21.
