Purcell names new deputy mayor

With less than a year to go in office, mayor is putting his final management team in place

As Mayor Bill Purcell enters the final stretch of his eight years in office, he's putting in a new team to take him to the finish line.

NashvillePost.com has learned that effective February 1, Curt Garrigan will be named deputy mayor of Nashville. Garrigan has been serving Purcell as assistant director at Metro Parks and is the husband of Nashville Scene editor Liz Garrigan. This slot came open with the announcement that current deputy mayor Bill Phillips is returning to the private sector at the end of the month.

Molly Sudderth is being promoted to Communications Director, effective immediately. Sudderth has served in Purcell's communication office for the past several years.

Sue Cain will officially serve as acting legal director, effective immediately. This position became available when Cain's predecessor, Karl Dean, announced that he was a candidate for Mayor.

Paul Haynes will be named director of the Nashville Career Advancement Center, replacing Christine Bradley, who has accepted a position with Vanderbilt University. His appointment becomes effective with Bradley's departure from Metro in early February.

Fire Chief Stephen Halford will officially take on the duties of Office of Emergency Management as acting director, in addition to his fire department leadership responsibilities.

As of now, three of Purcell's most senior aides appear to be staying on the ship. Longtime senior assistant Patrick Willard, economic development director Tom Jurkovich, and metro lobbyist Eddie Davidson, all widely respected throughout the business community, will continue in their respective roles for the mayor.
