McMillan joins Bredesen administration

Outgoing House Democratic Majority Leader joins Team Bredesen; two other cabinet members to depart

Gov. Phil Bredesen announced late today that outgoing Democratic Majority Leader of the State House Kim McMillan will serve as a senior advisor during his second term in office. Bredesen also announced Department of Revenue Commissioner Loren Chumley and Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Kenneth Robinson will be leaving the administration at the beginning of the year.

McMillan was first elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives representing the Clarksville area in 1994 and was re-elected five times. She has served on the Finance, Ways & Means Committee, the Budget Subcommittee, the Judiciary Committee, the Government Operations Committee, the Calendar and Rules Committee and served as the chairperson of the House Ethics Committee and House Rules Committee.

In 2002, and again in 2004, she was elected by her colleagues to the position of House Majority Leader, becoming the first woman in Tennessee history to serve in that position. After having practiced law for a number of years with her husband in the Clarksville firm they founded, McMillan & McMillan, McMillan rejoined the Nashville law firm of Boult, Cummings, Conners & Berry, where she first worked after graduating from law school.

Larry McMillan, Kim's husband, is a Clarksville Judge appointed to the bench by Bredesen.

Bredesen also announced Chumley's and Robinson's plans to leave the administration upon completion of the Governor's first term in office. Chumley has served as Revenue commissioner since January 2003, and Robinson has served as Health commissioner since February 2003.
