State unemployment remains unchanged at 5.7%

Tennessee’s unemployment rate for July was 5.7 percent, unchanged from the June revised rate, Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips announced today.

Prior to July, the state enjoyed five consecutive months of unemployment rate declines.

July 2014 to July 2015, Tennessee's unemployment rate decreased from 6.6 percent to 5.7 percent, while the national rate declined from 6.2 percent to 5.3 percent during the same period.

There was an increase of 1,300 non-farm jobs from June to July, with the largest increases occurring in leisure/hospitality, manufacturing, and wholesale trade.

Year over year, non-farm employment has added 52,500 jobs. The largest increases occurred in trade/transportation/utilities, leisure/hospitality, and professional/business services.

May sees state unemployment rate dip to 5.8%

Tennessee’s preliminary unemployment rate for May was 5.8 percent, down from April’s revised rate of 6 percent, Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips announced today.

The state’s May unemployment mark represents the fourth consecutive monthly decline and is the lowest monthly figure since March 2008, according to a release.

In comparison, the preliminary national unemployment rate for May was 5.5 percent, up from the revised rate of 5.4 percent in April.

From May 2014 to May 2015, Tennessee's unemployment figure has dropped to 5.8 percent from 6.5 percent, while the national rate declined to 5.5 percent from 6.3 percent during the same period.

The number of unemployed persons in Tennessee in May was 181,100. The mark was 184,200 in April.

Tennessee’s preliminary unemployment rate for February was 6.6 percent, down from January’s revised rate of 6.7 percent, Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips announced today.

The dip follows an increase from December to January, which came after four straight months of decreases.

In comparison, the national unemployment rate for February was 5.5 percent, down from the revised rate of 5.7 percent in January.

From February 2014 to February 2015, Tennessee's unemployment figure increased to 6.6 percent from 6.5 percent, while the national rate declined to 5.5 percent from 6.7 percent during the same period.

The number of unemployed persons in Tennessee in February was 199,700, down from the 201,700 mark in January.
