Metro pension fund adds to hedge fund pool

Pensions & Investments has an update on the search by Metro's Employee Benefit Trust Fund for a firm to manage a long/short hedge fund-of-funds. Chief Investment Officer Fadi BouSamra is looking to put to work $195 million — up from $185 million in November and $170 million in August.

CBL beats on strong same-store sales

CBL & Associates, the owner of CoolSprings Galleria, Hickory Hollow and RiverGate Mall, posted a first-quarter profit of $10.9 million, more than six times its year-ago number. Per-share earnings beat the Street by 3 cents as same-store sales at the company's properties rose 4.7 percent. The company also signed more than 1 million square feet of new leases during the quarter.

Hospital fee legislation pushes ahead

Andy Sher at the Chattanooga Times Free Press has the update on the Tennessee Hospital Association's "coverage fee" legislation. The bill — which authorizes a 3.5 percent fee on hospital revenues to offset TennCare cuts — passed through the House Finance Committee this week. From the story:
"Today's unanimous vote in the House Finance Committee was another big step in restoring $659 million in proposed TennCare cuts," Hospital Association President Craig Becker said. "We are optimistic that the legislation will receive the same positive response by the full Senate on Thursday and the full House next week."

In Brazil -- which learned a thing or two about frenzied finance during its many bouts with hyperinflation -- bank directors, senior bank officers and controlling bank stockholders know that they are personally responsible for the solvency of the institution with which they are associated. Let it fail, and their net worths are frozen for the duration of often-lengthy court proceedings. If worse comes to worse, the responsible and accountable parties can lose their all.
