Nissan has contracted with T.W. Frierson to expand the former Singer Sewing and B&W Wholesale distribution center in Murfreesboro. The auto maker is adding 400,000 square feet of warehouse space to the back of a smaller building that now can house some call center, engineering and IT workers. Chambers Williams has the details.
It will be shared by the Nissan Export Center and a parts-return operation, said Nissan spokesman Justin Saia. The facility is located about three miles from the main Smryna plant. The number of workers based in the warehouse has not yet been determined, he said.
Brian Byrd has been named CFO of Roscoe Brown, the storied HVAC and plumbing contractor that has offices in Murfreesboro, Nashville and Tullahoma. Byrd, a Murfreesboro resident and MTSU graduate, spent 13 years at the former Gaylord Entertainment, where he was executive director of shared financial services and controller of the ResortQuest business the company owned for a while.
The estate of Jim Buchanan, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in economics, on Thursday said it would give $2.5 million to the Middle Tennessee State University Honors College. Part of the bequest will go toward establishing a lecture series focused on applying Buchanan's ideas to today's economic questions.
The Tennessee Valley Authority and Nashville Electric Service have cut a $350,000 check to Bridgestone Americas as a reward for the energy efficiency improvements the tire maker has made in recent years at its La Vergne plant. An improved lighting system installed in 2010 has cut power consumption by 3.8 million kilowatt-hours. The cash will go into the Bridgestone Americas Environmental and Energy Strategic Fund to be applied to other conservation projects.
Hungry Howie's Pizza has opened its first location in Murfreesboro. Located at 2015B Lascassas Pike, the franchised store is owned by Jon Curfman. Taylor, Mich.-based Hungry Howie's Pizza Inc. is the 11th largest pizza chain in the United States with 575 locations. Read more here.

Nissan executives say they will hike the pay for production employees and maintenance technicians at the company's plants in Smyrna, Decherd and Canton, Miss. The bump, which will come this October, will add 55 cents per hour for line workers and 65 cents per hour for maintenance techs. It's the first hike for them since 2006.
