Goo Goo Cluster LLC has landed a permit for the signage to accompany the retail space the Nashville-based candy maker will open at 116 Third Ave. S. in SoBro. Joslin Sign and Maintenance Co. Inc. has the permit, valued at $2,500. Read more about the project here.
The Belmont women’s basketball still has a chance to finish the regular season with a winning record. Having won their last five, the Bruins are 12-14 overall with three games remaining.
The university and its athletics department have set their sights much higher.
At halftime of Saturday’s women’s basketball game against Eastern Illinois (2 p.m., Curb Events Center), they intend to break the Guinness World Record for most people unwrapping a candy simultaneously.
The record, according to the Guinness website, is 590, set in July 2012 at the Lindt Chocolate R.S.V.P. National Conference.
Fans who participate will receive a free Goo Goo Cluster — from hometown company Standard Candy — for use in the record attempt.
University officials, therefore, not only hope for a good crowd (capacity is 5,085), but they also need volunteers willing to serve as witnesses and stewards of the event with the following disclaimer: “The volunteers should not be related to each other and cannot work for Belmont University.”

The team at Goo Goo Cluster last week opened the doors to their first branded store, a spot on the grounds of the Fontanel complex north of downtown. The store will carry the three Goo Goo Cluster variations, Bravo Gelato's locally made products, brand merchandise and other knick-knacks.
The Goo Goo Cluster will celebrate its 100th birthday this year and parent company Standard Candy plans to roll out a big marketing and PR push, including through various events. The Nashville-based company has picked The Andrews Agency to help it spread the word.
“We’ve got some surprises in store for this year, and it was important to us to team up with local folks who share a passion for Nashville, and of course, chocolate,” said Paine. “We look forward to the partnership and ultimately the celebration we have in store for this year.”
