Two local linemen make it into UT's starting lineup for season opener

The University of Tennessee’s depth chart for Sunday’s football opener against Utah State – predictably – includes 15 freshmen.

Most of them, though, are backups.

The exceptions are a pair of Middle Tennessee linemen. Jashon Robertson, a true freshman out of Montgomery Bell Academy, is listed as the starter at right guard and Derek Barnett, a true freshman out of Brentwood Academy, is a starter at defensive end.

The Volunteers are the only team in the country that has not returning starters on either the offensive or defensive lines.

Outside of the Robertson (pictured), the other four starters on the offensive line are all juniors or seniors. Barnett is part of a unit that can grow together. The defense’s front four also includes two sophomores and a senior.

Other notable freshmen included on the depth chart, which was released Monday:

• Josh Malone (Station Camp) is a second-team wide receiver behind Pig Howard

• Jalen Hurd (Beech) is a second-team running back behind Marlin Lane

• Aaron Medley (Marshall County) is listed as a possible starter at kicker (he is an ‘or’ with sophomore George Bullock) and the backup punter.
