Vanderbilt tennis duo achieves All-American double

Two players. Three All-America honors.

That pretty much sums up what Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman and Gonzales Austin accomplished Thursday at the NCAA Tennis Championships.

Each advanced to the round of 16 with three-set victories in singles and then combined for a straight-set victory that earned them a place in the doubles round of 16. Those results were enough to guarantee All-America honors when all is said and done.

They are the first players in program history to be ITA All-Americans in singles and doubles and the first doubles team ever to earn that honor.

Lipman, a senior from Nashville, is now a two-time All-American, the program’s first since Bobby Reynolds (2002, 2003). Last year, he was the first Commodores player in 10 years to achieve that status.

Austin, a junior, became Vanderbilt’s fifth all-time All-American.
