Vanderbilt sends two to second round of NCAA Men's Tennis Championships for the first time

Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman and Gonzales Austin will do double duty Thursday at the NCAA Tennis Championships.

Each will continue in the singles competition following a groundbreaking pair of victories on Wednesday and then they will team up in the first round of the doubles competition.

Austin, ranked 21st by the ITA, won his opening match 6-2, 6-2. Lipman (pictured), ranked 59th, had a much tougher test but upset No. 10 Yannick Hanfmann of USC 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 (5).

It is the first time in program history two players made it to the second round of the singles in the same year. Lipman, a senior from Nashville, scored first-round victories in two of his three NCAA appearances (2010, 2013). Austin, a junior from Miami, is in the field for the second time. He lost in the first round last year.

Together they form the third seed in the 32-team doubles field and are the first Vanderbilt doubles team to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2005.
