Vanderbilt coach James Franklin dismissed as “baseless” a published report over the weekend that suggested he told former players accused in an ongoing rape investigation to dispose of evidence.
At his regular Monday press briefing, Franklin was asked about the BuzzFeed.com report, which included a quote from an unnamed source that the coach saw a video of the alleged sexual assault and counseled the players to delete it. He did not respond directly to the accusation but echoed comments from his attorney in that story about the level of his and the university’s cooperation with the investigation.
"This is what I will comment on: Number one, there is nobody that understands the seriousness of this situation more than me. I could not be more sympathetic to the alleged victim. It’s a very, very serious issue and I’m not going to waste your time or mine reacting to baseless statements. I’m not going to do it.
"We’ve cooperated fully with the university. We’ve cooperated fully with authorities. That’s really as far as I’m going to go with it."
