Trust But E-Verify
Greg Siskind reports that if you want to do business with the state you are going to have to verify your workers are not illegal:That's a lot more businesses than most people realize. The vast majority of health care employers are subject since they take Medicare. All universities that participate in the federal student loan programs are government contractors. Every business that deals with the Department of Defense will need to comply. The list will be very, very long.SEE ALSO: The Order

Lamar Wants To Hear About You And Your Story
Katie Allison Granju reports that Lamar Alexander wants to to feekl your pain. But first you have to tell him about it:If you’d be willing to share your story, please take a few minutes to send me an e-mail at gasprices@alexander.senate.gov with a paragraph or two about how your family is affected by gas prices. Please include your name, address, and a phone number where my office can reach you if I have any questions. I’ll share some of these stories on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

A Culture Attacked Is A Culture Renewed
Say Uncle notices that government gun bans may have the opposite of the intended affect:He said he had never been into guns but, in 1994 just prior to the assault weapons ban going into effect, he bought a Glock 17 and a few regular capacity mags because he thought they’d be banned. He still has it. He’s only shot it a handful of times and wasn’t really a gun guy. He just knew he had to have something that politicians were wanting to ban him having.

Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam To Frist Country Amid Gubernatorial Bid Speculation
R. Neal remarks that the name of Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam on the bill of the Statesman's dinner, the TNGOP's annual social event and fundraiser, as evidence the East Tennessee executive may have his eyes on the Governor's mansion. Indeed. A potential Gubernatorial candidate would be silly not to make on appearance at "the" GOP occasion of the year but is this appearance itself proof positive of such intent or is a more overt act needed to encourage such speculation? How about this? Next Saturday, at a rather low key event for the Davidson County GOP, a picnic and straw poll for local races here in the county, Mayor Haslam will be the featured speaker. The Statesman's Dinner is one thing, every GOPer and their momma will be there, but a Davidson GOP county picnic in Nashville? That's quite a trip for a elected Mayor to make three hours from home. This, of course, is to say nothing of the curious omission from the bill affaire. Former Governor Winfield Dunn will be there as well as Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn and the Republican state legislators from Davidson but Davidson's county's resident rumored Gubernatorial candidate Bill Frist will not be in attendance, at least according to the announcement. Makes one wonder. These two titans under normal circumstances would be "field clearers" and if one or the other got in they would likely do just that. The question is: will they either clear the way for the other? With the Democratic bench looking a bit peaked and the trend in Tennessee being that a two term Governor of one party is succeeded by a man of the party opposite will the reality that the Republican primary likely determines who sits in the Governor's chair force these two field clearers to face each other? Bob Tuke's Senate Sweatshop
Campaign manager Ben Chao isn't the only member of the Bob Tuke for Senate crew willing to put in work for a low price. Lynne Edgerton, who pondered a U.S. Senate run herself, fills me in via Facebook:"Ben Chao is not the only person who so strongly believes that Bob Tuke should be Tennessee's Senator that he is working for free. Lynne Todd Edgerton, the campaign's Treasurer and General Counsel, is also working pro bono, because she knows Tuke is as smart as a whip, a committed patriot, and a committed steward of Tennessee's environment and of the global environment. Tuke himself has devoted untold hours to volunteer activities over his life. Our state is the "volunteer" state, so why it is so foreign to Alexander's supporters that Tennesseans would volunteer to support a candidate they believe in beats me."

A Referendum On Jimmy Naifeh
Chris Sanders wonders how the Republicans will go at state Rep. Nathan Vaughn in a quest to capture his East Tennessee seat when the man seems to strike such a conservative pose:Doesn't Vaughn disrupt a challenge from the Right by being so pro-life/anti-choice himself? Republicans will argue that Vaughn may vote for abortion restrictions but that he helps elect a pro-choice/pro-abortion leadership. That argument will convince the die-hard activists, but how do you explain that in a simple way to the average voter, when most voters don't closely follow state legislative races to begin with?

Hot Gas
Newscoma thinks the New York Times is right on the money about the impact of high gas prices on rural areas:Recently, I went to court. Gas theft was an issue. Farmers are having to watch their implements. It went from people stealing anhydrous to stealing gas. When people get boxed into a corner, they get desperate. This is more dire than people think. I can’t say that enough.SEE ALSO: Tiny Cat Pants R. Neal Newscoma TNDP Crone speaks

YouTube Follows Tennessee Flack To New England
Former Harold Ford, Jr. for Senate Communications Director Carol Andrews is catching a bit of flack up in Maine, where she runs the communications shop for Tom Allen for U.S. Senate, for her actions during the 2006 race and her past associations with the political consulting firm of Fletcher, Rowley, Chao and Riddle. UPDATE: Liz Garrigan reacts:Among Tennessee media (and now Maine's), she is perhaps the most reviled political communications operative in recent memory. Combative and heavy-handed, Andrews was a liability to Ford, who was more accessible to national media than statewide media during his failed Senate run. That was no doubt at least one reason why he was the only Democrat running for an open Senate seat not to be elected.
