The dangers of judicial elections

From Andrea Zelinski's story on the retention elections:

"I do hope that we don't totally politicize those elections," says Criminal Appeals Court Judge Jeff Bivins, whom Haslam is upgrading to Supreme Court justice after the election to replace the retiring Koch.

"I think it is important that we understand that judicial candidates can't talk about issues, so that makes it very difficult, a very different kind of election," Bivins says. "I think it's very complicating when we try to make it a purely partisan race as opposed to more of a judicial race. But that's certainly [Ramsey's] right to do so."
