End-running moderates

Frank Niceley has an idea: Get rid of primaries for the Senate and let legislative caucuses pick the parties' nominees. Now, he's pretty clever in making this proposal — he says it would give the TNDP a weapon against the insidious tyranny of the alphabet and prevent Democrats from falling on their collective keister and nominating Mark Clayton again. But — and this is just a working theory — it would also increase the chances Republicans nominate senatorial candidates that resemble guys like Niceley and not so much men like Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker.
