The only sheriff in town

Sean Braisted with notes on a bill filed by Sen. Campfield and Rep. Dunn that "provides that a federal employee who is not designated as a Tennessee peace officer may not make an arrest or conduct a search and seizure in this state without the written permission of the sheriff of the county in which the arrest, search and seizure will take place except under certain circumstances."

Braisted:

Perhaps Sen. Campfield is anticipating a slate of drug legalization laws that would put us in conflict with the Federal Government, or maybe he's preparing for enforcement of some consumer protection laws, I'm not sure...

Yep, let's piss off the FBI.

Yep, let's piss off the FBI. Great idea... Have these people ever heard of the Tennessee Waltz?

This is how the

Hey Matt, is there some

Hey Matt, is there some reason why this bill is neccisary? Can you site some arrests or detentions by federal law enforcement and explain how this was an abuse of state's rights? Can the bill sponsor provide this detail before we engage in yet another provication with the federal government?

Campfield is always way ahead

Campfield is always way ahead of the game in Tennessee and sees many things coming down the road most of us aren't even aware of.

He introduced this

He introduced this legislation so that things such as the Federal Hate Crimes legislation will be null and void. The legislature has already begum implementing new Jim Crow laws with the new Photo ID act.

Look up Mack v. United

Look up Mack v. United States, or simply go to http://sheriffmack.com

The majority opinion written by Scallia clearly supports the premise of such a law. It is time that the authority of the Sheriff, codified by the Magna Carta in 1215, be used for the defense of the Constitution.

Doubters need only to look up

Doubters need only to look up Mack v. US

The case overturned the Brady Bill, but the broad powers of the sheriff in common law were restated and strengthened significantly. The majority opinion written by Scallia clearly supports the premise of such a law.

Nice job, Senator Campfield! It is time that the authority of the Sheriff, codified by the Magna Carta in 1215, be used for the defense of the Constitution.

Sorry about the redundancy.

Just retro me back to my slave age in Egypt and skip all this 1215 Magnum .45 BS.

Wait a tick, I thought you guys were supposed to be opposed to the court looking at foreign documents when making judicial decisions?

This is a bill to create more

This is a bill to create more bureacracy and a way to slow down the effectivenss of law enforcement of federal crimes.

If a lunatic, like in Arizona, shoots member of Congress, a judge, or another federal official, which is a federal crime, the FBI has to get permission from Sheriff Bubba to investigate and make an arrest. In the meantime, valuable time is lost, the guilty party gets away, more itme and money is spent to solve the crime.

I thought you Repbublicans are against more bureacracy and government.

In the meantime, the guilty parties get away, making it more expense and time consuming to solve the crime.

This is a backdoor effort to

This is a backdoor effort to assert state supremacy over the federal government. Federal agents MUST be allowed free access to thier jurisdiction of federal crimes and the ability to assert their powers of investigation and arrest without interferrence. It is a federal crime to impede a federal agent in the perforance of their duties. This legitimizes the concept of a sheriffs fiefdom and diminish federal protections against such!

Apparently very few people

Apparently very few people here have read the bill, as it makes provisions for situations when the federal agents must take immediate action.

On a serious note, how will counties like Davidson be affected by this bill where the sheriff has no law enforcement authority and merely keeps the jails and serves civil process?

Yeah and follow the constitution, PFC Bringdown.

Surely you never really swore to defend the constitution.

The only thing down around here is PFC's IQ.

veritas (AKA Jethro) Uh, I

veritas (AKA Jethro)

Uh, I did take an oath to defend the constitution AND the country, served proudly and with a degree of distinction, that is a matter of public record. Never was a PFC (corpsman with a marine rifle company and a Force Recon unit, 2 tours Vietnam), but if you insist on labeling me as such I will accept the honor.
While my IQ may be an issue with some, it is sufficient to deal with an insulting troll such as yourself (Jethro?).
If you can notice I said state supremecy, which is NEVER mentioned in our constitution. While I realize it is the mission of some to destroy the concept of a federal government in favor of a loose coalition of states, am I at fault to compare this dubious legislation to such an effort. It dose fit in my humble opinion.
