Fare for the air

Nashville International Airport saw an average airfare of $353 in the 2011 fourth quarter, ranking 61st nationally in terms of highest prices, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

BNA’s round-trip domestic itinerary average airfare price was below the overall average ($368) of all 100 airports the bureau ranked. The airport’s Q4 2011 average fare was 8.6 percent higher than its Q4 2010 average fare.

"Fuel prices increased during this time," Emily Richard, Metro Nashville Airport Authority spokeswoman, said of the average fare increase. "[But] BNA ticket prices remain among the lowest."

Memphis International Airport, with an average fare of  $484, ranked third for most expensive airfares. Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport had the highest average fare for Q4 2011 at $502.

Of note, Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport saw its Q4 2011 average airfare actually drop 0.6 percent from Q4 2010. The airport’s average fare of $425 ranked No. 12 on the list.
