Cumberland Caverns preps for Mayan apocalypse
According to some who give a little too much credence to old stone calendars, Dec. 21 of 2012 has been predicted to be a day of some catastrophic, history-changing event.
This date is regarded as the end-date of the ancient Mayan calendar. Whatever floods, earthquakes or alien abductions may come, Cumberland Caverns in McMinnville is offering a safe place for you and your family.
“We are not saying we believe the Mayans or that the Zombie Apocalypse will start that day” says General Manager Teddy Jones. “We are just saying you never can be too cautious about these things.”
Jones says Cumberland Caverns is safe from all natural or unnatural disasters that may happen on the 21st. And by the looks of things, they are prepared. In addition to serving up a lunch special that day, Cumberland Caverns will be screening videos of their Bluegrass Underground concert series in the Volcano Room. Jones says that many of their guests may not want to risk coming back out of the cave.
"In times past, Cumberland Caverns has slept up to 600 folks a night," he said. "However, in not knowing what survival supplies may be needed, reservations will be cut off to the first 300 that send in a deposit for the underground hunkering down."
